HTML is the language of the text files of which most web pages are made.
Even though we see fancy images, fonts, links and layouts when we view pages in a browser, a formal computer language is needed to describe these elements simply. Otherwise, computers would take too long to understand human markup commands and would make too many mistakes!
To read more about the history of the web try visiting CERN or w3.org or a search on "web history", "history of the web", "www 1992".
The acronym HTML in its entirety stands for: Hyper Text Markup Language.
